Improvised Ambiant, lo-fi Electronic & Field Record Music

FRIDAY OCTOBER 27th - 19:00
Haekem Theatre: Rue de Laeken - 66 Lakensestraat - 1000 Brussels

Overdriven Dreams seeks to bring the endless sound fields of phantasmagoric dreams to life.

&

Inspired by voyages, lighthouses and history Northern Lighthouse makes electronic music using samplers, tape, guitar pedals, modular and keyboard synths.

overdriven dreams
is the moniker of Uroš Kostić, an ambient composer from Niš, Serbia. After many years of studying the potential of his main instrument and various other devices throughout work with several bands and projects, most prominently with the post-rock band There., he started utilizing those sounds in his solo work.

overdriven dreams seeks to bring the infinite sound fields of phantasmagoric dreams to life. In the process, he relies primarily on experimentation in the field of post-minimalism, drone, and ambient by working with 4-track cassette tape loops, field recordings, and reel-to-reel tape loops. His pieces are characterized by deep ostinato lines and meandering lush textures permeated with string instruments, pianos, and choirs. For his album “symphony // of // murmurings” which was released by the Netherlands label Slow Tone Collages he collaborated with one of the most prolific experimental artists Lawrence English as a mastering engineer.

In a short time, he established himself as one of the currently most active ambient musicians in the Balkan region, above all at numerous performances around Europe, where he shared the stage with well-known artists such as Pan-American (ex-Labradford), Alison Cotton, and Wojciech Rusin.

A smooth and long dive into the depths
of the sounds around us, analog effects
and tape world, otherworldly noises and
opaque, barely perceptible vibrations. 10/10 – NoiseMe

This is a prime 31-minute track, starting
slow and soft, building gradually.
Numerous sounds slowly layer themselves in;
some are voices and others are familiar
but not quite identifiable – somewhat musical
and somewhat otherworldly - Tuning to obscure

Northern Lighthouse
Born in Bologna (IT), based in Brussels (BE), he started releasing tracks in 2014 in the windy and cold northeast of England where he lived for a few years.
His music combines elements of ambient, lo-fi electronic music and field recordings: soundscapes with a nostalgic and emotive atmosphere paying tribute to distant memories and remoted and isolated places.

Haekem: Duerinckx I Wachtelaer I Massolini I Trio - Sat Oct 28th - 19:00

#improvisedmusic #haekem #haekemtheatre #Brussels #gerarddaval #livemusic #improvisation #Sax #drums #jjduerinckx #mattiamassolini #dirkwachtelaer,

Duerinckx, Wachtelaer, Massolini trio

Improvised Music
Haekem Theatre: Rue de Laeken - 66 Lakensestraat - 1000 Brussels

The Duerinckx, Wachtelaer, Massolini trio is undoubtedly a trio that will prick your heart.
His uncompromising music will take you on a journey to the confines of a well-assumed freedom...

JJ Duerinckx aka Maurice Charles JJ (B)
Sopranino and baritone saxophones

Practicing improvisation for over 20 years. Many renowned musicians from the world of free improvised music mark his career, such as Lol Coxhill, John Russell, Michel Doneda, Barre Philips, Jacques Foschia, Tom Jackson, Adrian Northover, Matthieu Safatly, Tatsuya Nakatani, Peter Jacquemyn, Roger Turner, Dan Warburton, Anton Mobin... just to name a few.

Sensitive to the visual arts, he is interested in electro-acoustic music, sound art and more particularly in the notion of "soundscapes", a concept dear to the composer R Murray Schaffer in his book "The Tuning of the world". The idea of confronting sound material and melodies, whether abstract or not, constitutes one of the bases of his musical language as well as a vector of energy to share.

In 2018, he founded “Unreal Brotherface” with the acousmatic composer Stephan Dunkelman, whom he met in 2004 within Zohara, an ensemble created by Zahava Seewald produced by John Zorn (Tzadik 2004) in which he played. Unreal Brotherface participated, among others, in the City Sonic Winter session 2019 and the Belgian Music Days 2020

MxSx, his duet with Dimitri Coppe, was created in Flagey during the 2022 Sound Week and is a tribute to the recently deceased composer.
The confrontation of his sound expertise with other modes of artistic expression such as visual arts, performance, contemporary dance, remains essential to his artistic research.
He participates in CEPI founded by double bassist Barre Philips
Collaborations among others with Harold Schellinx, Patricia Kuypers, Frank Beaubois, Pascale Gille, Stéphanie Auberville, Isako Horikawa, Peter M. Friess...

In 2015, he met the multimedia artist Alexandra Dementieva with whom he played in the duo 'Tunnel Hearing' recently joined by the cellist/double bassist José Bedeur.

In March 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, he created Lamaφ (lamaphi), a multidisciplinary protean group, bringing together dancers, musicians and videographers.
It is the basis of the lab'OMFI: a transdisciplinary experimental laboratory which was held at the Halles St Géry in Brussels from 2017 to 2019.

He is founder of the OMFI collective (2011/2019) with cellist Matthieu Safatly and created the group Neptunian Maximalism in 2018 with multi-instrumentalist guitarist Guillaume Cazalet.

Dirk Wachtelaer (B)
Drums

Dirk Wachtelaer has been playing drums for more than 30 years.

He has been active in many genres but his main focus has always been on improvisation and experimentation.

He has played with Paul Schutze, Toshinori Kondo, Stevie Wishart, Phillip Clemo, and many others.

He recorded 3 solo albums and leads the ensemble Vanishing Pictures, creating music that vanishes when you try to label it.

Mattia Massolini (IT),
Double bass

Mattia Massolini was born in 1981 in Pavia (IT), he lived in Florence between 2001 and 2006 where he collaborated with several swing and gypsy jazz groups.

In 2008, he moved to Brussels where he began studying classical double bass at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels

In the meantime he has worked with "Too Much and the white nots" and other Belgian songwriters, with the Folk Fusion group "Stingo" and collaborated with several orchestras in Belgium and France (ONB, BPO) .

His interest in improvisation was born during contact dance jams in Brussels, where he met artists who would change his vision and his approach to improvisation: Michel Massot, Ernst Glerum, Jon Rose, Seijiro Murayama, Jean-Luc Guillonet

He has collaborated with several free improvisation collectives such as the P.I.L.S collective, Lamaphi, BIC, Bubble Dance. Member of the improvisation trio MA.MA.AND with Andres Navarro and Marcello Giannandrea

Duo Anouck Genthon (violon) &
David Meier (percussions)

"After years of experience in bebop, West Coast and modal jazz, French alto and soprano saxophonist Ornella Noulet has devoted herself with great dedication and passion to free improvisation and sound research since 2 years. Having played saxophone since the age of seven and spent over 12 years at French conservatories, she is currently studying at the CRB in Brussels. This year, she consolidated her duo with Belgian drummer Ferdinand Lezaire, playing a double concert with Farida Amadou & Moor Mother. A solo set, quartet with Quentin Stokart and Ferdinand, and with Cole Scmidt and Ferdinand and and a duo set with Ferdinand in Haekem.

Ferdinand Lezaire, also from Brussels, is a musician and DJ (Les Ateliers Claus, Sound In Motion), who studied drums in schools, conservatories and on his own.
For the past 5 years, he has been playing free improvised music.
This year, he is studying improvisation at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège.

Haekem: Kodian trio - Wed Oct 4th -19:30

Improvised Experimental Music
Free Jazz aesthetics

Wednesday Oct 4th, 19:30

Colin Webster: alto sax
Andrew Lisle: drums
Dirk Serries: electric guitar

Kodian Trio
Kodian Trio have only been together since 2015. The trio of Colin Webster on alto sax, Andrew Lisle on drums, and Dirk Serries on electric guitar has been touring extensively ever since their inception. The shared experiences of the road, studio, travel, evinces a group sound which is constantly shifting, solidifying, and disappearing completely - true to the essence of free improvisation.

Kodian Trio's 3rd studio album - and their second for Trost Records, was recorded in one intense live session at the White Noise studio in The Netherlands during a day-off on a European tour. On this album the trio shows the core strength as a unit gained from their live experiences, and a band in top shape. Yet within the turmoil there is also a sense of joy, and most importantly a perfect dialogue.
KODIAN TRIO is not a power trio per se but a band that combines free jazz aesthetics with modern experimentation.

KODIAN TRIO live at SCHEUNE Dresden 2022

KODIAN TRIO at Het Bos 2018 photo by Jef Vandebroek

KODIAN TRIO

“Kodian Trio … blasts through, mashing free improv clicks and clatters
with free jazz-inspired hoots and hollers, all wrapped up in a waistcoat of gimlet-eyed punk attitude.” – Paul Margree, We Need No Swords Some are building directly on the foundations of pioneers while others are always on the lookout for fresh, contemporary sounds, or try to combine them.

But they’re all united by a similar curiosity, a search for finding their own voices, and a never-ending reinvention of themselves.

Improvising power unit KODIAN TRIO rose from the ashes of a scorching concert at London’s Café Oto in 2015. Already eight years later and armed with three major studio albums and multiple live appearances later, the trio have become major contenders on the fertile and outwardlooking European scene. The trio is a working band in a constant explorative phase, from the first modest steps to the confident live reputation they have created. KODIAN TRIO is a unique one with 3 strong musicians constantly challenging themselves to move further and  beyond.

This is free music that actually lives up to its ambitions and frequently uses its maximum potential for individual and collective freedom, while at the same time maintaining a coherence that only becomes apparent with repeated and/or intense listening. It requires an effort, but the rewards are an insight into a unique musical language.

the three confidently navigate their way through real-time improvisations scalding to the touch. Yes, blistering episodes surface—dissonant squeals from Dikeman, prickly shards from Serries, and volatile flourishes by Lisle—but so too do fleeting moments of calm as the trio brings a unified sensibility to the undertaking. With the exception of the surprisingly restrained fifteen-minute closer “III,” I catches the trio breathing communal fire: imagine forty-six minutes of bristling, molten improv and you’re in the right ballpark. I offers compelling exercises in musical democracy.” Opduvel – The Netherlands

These musicians are far too talented to simply go hell for leather or indulge in macho noise grandstanding. Instead, their noise-making has an intricacy and control while still sounding spontaneous and raw. Webster tends to avoid the obvious low end raunch of the baritone, using its sheer physicality to lend force to high register squalls and breath effects. His introduction of the alto sax halfway through the third side is an unexpected delight, as he embarks on a bright, Eastern European tinged solo over some of Lisles’s most energetic and inventive drumming. The long drones and deconstructed funk of the final side bring further evidence of this trio’s resourcefulness and imagination.” The Quietus – UK

London based saxophonist Colin Webster is known for working from extreme sonic palettes – from minimal to maximal, constantly pushing boundaries. Equipped with a razor-sharp, punk spirit, and ferocious technique, Webster has established himself as a unique voice on the European avant-garde scene, regularly collaborating with many of the key figures in improvised and experimental music.

Also based in London, Andrew Lisle’s quick and highly textural playing is making him highly in-demand in the fertile improvisation community. In turns both propulsive and abstract, Lisle has works with many leading voices on the UK and European improvised music scene, including Kit Downes, John Edwards, Ab Baars, Rodrigo Amado and John Dikeman.

Dirk Serries – curator of the A New Wave of Jazz label – is hardly your average improvising musician. Even though the man has a fondness for the classic free jazz of the sixties and seventies and the current updates, his own talents lie elsewhere. As a master of texture, a skill which he’s been able to forge and refine for more than 30 years (as vidnaObmana, Fear Falls

Burning, Microphonics, with collaborative projects and, more recently, under his own name), he has always been involved in the more abstract, or sound-oriented wing of experimental music. Serries is now less reliant on his trademark effects and loops. A new ‘naked’ language that veers from gentle strumming to scribbling, pointillism, and occasional outbursts of disjointed howls.
Pulling from his great experience in the worlds of ambient and industrial music, as well as from masters like Derek Bailey, Serries’ approach is improvisation that relies purely on his relationship with his electric guitar, prepared or not.
