OWCZAREK    I    LAURO    I    ORINS

FRI DEC 8th    I   19:00

MASTER IMPROVISED MUSIC   I   SAX   I   SAX   I   DRUMS

Haekem Theatre: Rue de Laeken - 66 Lakensestraat - 1000 Brussels

Paulina Owczarek and Peter Orins met in 2015, when they were both invited by pianist and conductor Satoko Fujii to participate in the creation of the Satoko Fujii Orchestra Berlin. A few concerts and two records of the orchestra later, the two musicians, one living in Krakow in Poland, the other in Lille in France, keep in touch or cross paths at concerts…

In 2019, the saxophonist invites the drummer to play his solo in Krakow, and the two take the opportunity to try the duet experience: the meeting is luminous.

Both musicians are fond of a total and unlimited freedom, and of a research on timbres and sound experimentations.
Close-up sound, play on the breaths and squeaks of objects, minimal approach but also raw energy that reminds a certain tradition of the saxophone-drum duo in the history of free-jazz…

For this concert they invite the Brussel based saxophone player Audrey Lauro, who plays with Peter Orins in a trio together with Christian Pruvost.

Paulina Owczarek – saxophonist and improviser, graduated from the Academy of Music in Krakow. She plays the alto and baritone sax

Interested mainly in free improvisation, she also performs contemporary chamber music, having premièred numerous new works for saxophone in Poland.

She is an active member of improvised and experimental music scene, taking part in Krakow free improv projects (such as Institute Of Intuition, Muzykoterapia) and international festivals of contemporary and improvised music (Ad Libitum, Hurta Cordel, Musica Electronica Nova, Ostrava Days, Lublin Jazz Festival, AudioArt, Sound Exchange, Krakow Jazz Autumn, Mirror Mirror, Discordian Community Riot, No Woman No Art, Unsound, Soundance, Saalfelden Jazz Festival).

The founder and conductor of Krakow Improvisers Orchestra, an ensemble dedicated to conducted improvisation. Currently she is also involved in groups such as Morświn, Human.error, Dust Mite Paradise and Sambar

She has been a member of London Improvisers Orchestra and Satoko Fuji Orchestra; she has worked with theatres: Teatr Stary, Teatr Sztuk and Krakow Opera and has improvised with poets, dancers and painters.

Audrey Lauro : Brussels-based saxophonist A.L trained in composition, jazz and contemporary music

She then devoted her energies to experimental music and particularly to improvisation, constantly questioning the language of instrument, phrase and sonic event.

«From phrase to sonic event through all kinds of atoms and particles».

A.L started in 2002 a jazz cursus at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels and contemporary composition cursus at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège

Since then she has spent the last decade developing her music on experimental music scenes in Belgium and abroad.
She meets on her artistic path recognized musicians such as Mark Sanders, John Russell, Lawrence Casserley, Alison Blunt, Maggie Nicols, Steve Noble, Bernard Santacruz, Makoto Sato, Alexander Hawkins, Ken Vandermark, Sabu Toyozumi, Marc Ribot, …

Her discography includes more than fifteen releases since 2008, the album solo «Sous un ciel d'écailles» was released in 2022 on the Gent label El Negocito records, retracing a work for saxophone solo started in 2011.

Peter Orins is a French drummer, who has been playing jazz, improvised and experimental music since the mid-90’s.

In 2001 he created the Circum collective (now called Muzzix) for which he’s still one of the artistic directors

Leading numerous projects inside the collective, from solo works to big orchestras, he also plays with many international musicians (Satoko Fujii, Natsuki Tamura, Ikue Mori, Dave Rempis, Joke Lanz, Michael Pisaro-Liu, Anthony Pateras, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Sophie Agnel, and Christine Wodrascka and others), and is very active on the improvised music scene in France and abroad

Since 2004, he has managed Circum-Disc, an artist-run label which has released some 100 recordings.

Première présentation publique de la
TRILOGIE EXPERIMENTALE DE FILMS :
« 2020 », « 2022 », « 2023 »

PIOTR OSUSZKIEWICZ

Le 2 décembre 2023 de 18h à 22h.

PREMIERE    I    FILMS

Electronic/Drone (Cello/Guitar/Machines)

under nickname THE EYE OF TIME

THE EYE OF TIME is the Solo-Project of the French musician Marc Euvrie.

Euvrie's musical development is deeply connected with the French diy scene though he has been classically trained as well.

He started to play piano being 9 years old, composed his first pieces with 15 and studied cello at the conservatoire after finishing school.

Being influenced by Claude Debussy, Philip Glass, Eric Chopin, J.S. Bach, Michael Nyman just as Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion or Portishead Marc Euvrie began to translate his personal reflection of our complex world into music.

Multi-instrumentalist and fan of classical, electronic and minimalism music, Marc Euvrie goes through pure simplicity aswell as generous and epic moments, all connected to romantism and impressionism of 18th and 19th Century.

Seeking introspection, his intimist live shows leads to contemplation, like spaces out of time creating the ability to escape a noisy daylife. We can think of Philip Glass, Max Richter, Johan Johannsen or Steve Reich, where classical music is fullfilled by electronic rythms and patterns that gives Euvrie's music a unique atmosphere.

Marc Euvrie has a very solid musical background since 25 years, from his many records released on the well-known avant-garde german label Denovali, and two decades of worldwide live shows into classical, electronic and punk scene.

In BRauchpoesie, sometimes a text triggers landscapes that will guide the improvisation, other times the sounds inspires clusters of words that unfold in a text.

Then softly performative and infantile moments arise amidst great tension and, thus, the simultaneous solos, the imitations, the possible responses from one sound to another, occasionally give a polyphonic character to the relationships within the trio.

However, and despite the great richness of timbre that its members contribute, with a playful and relaxing energy a search for a sound meeting point finds place, an allowing point to be able to take refuge and at the same time regain strength to leave again, what makes the music sound strange and yet, captivating.

"DIKTAT is a Dutch/French/Taiwanese electroacoustic alliance, that combines the idiomatic of EAI (Electro Acoustic Improvisation) with extreme contrapuntal thinking, the asymmetry of free declamation and the spontaneity of associative, surrealist collage.

The playback and manipulation of a multitude of (often voice based) lo-fi cassette tape recordings (either found or custom made) on in several cases badly degraded vintage equipment, and the occasional use of odd home-built electronic contraptions, provide the threads, that, through the double bass's thrust and control, its steer and its stitch, are woven into a tense, coherent & multi-layered sonic fabric of varying narrational density.

There's no sound without story. There are no stories without sound…

Diktat has been active since 2006, originally with Parisian based double bass player Jean Bordé, nowadays with Shih-wen Lee on double bass, who is originally from Taiwan, but currently based in Brussels."

" ... DIKTAT's concerts are recorded in the emergency of a wild energy. A little punks, a little academicians, they play outside, along a river, sometimes in galleries and walls disappear... The more one listens to this fierce album the more comes to one’s mind Moondog, who played in streets and ended his life in Germany. The choice to record this 'DIKTAT in Berlin' makes even stronger the assertion that these 4 are indeed the dignified heritors of the incredibly missed Louis Thomas Hardin..."

Improvised Ambiant, lo-fi Electronic & Field Record Music

FRIDAY OCTOBER 27th - 19:00
Haekem Theatre: Rue de Laeken - 66 Lakensestraat - 1000 Brussels

Overdriven Dreams seeks to bring the endless sound fields of phantasmagoric dreams to life.

&

Inspired by voyages, lighthouses and history Northern Lighthouse makes electronic music using samplers, tape, guitar pedals, modular and keyboard synths.

overdriven dreams
is the moniker of Uroš Kostić, an ambient composer from Niš, Serbia. After many years of studying the potential of his main instrument and various other devices throughout work with several bands and projects, most prominently with the post-rock band There., he started utilizing those sounds in his solo work.

overdriven dreams seeks to bring the infinite sound fields of phantasmagoric dreams to life. In the process, he relies primarily on experimentation in the field of post-minimalism, drone, and ambient by working with 4-track cassette tape loops, field recordings, and reel-to-reel tape loops. His pieces are characterized by deep ostinato lines and meandering lush textures permeated with string instruments, pianos, and choirs. For his album “symphony // of // murmurings” which was released by the Netherlands label Slow Tone Collages he collaborated with one of the most prolific experimental artists Lawrence English as a mastering engineer.

In a short time, he established himself as one of the currently most active ambient musicians in the Balkan region, above all at numerous performances around Europe, where he shared the stage with well-known artists such as Pan-American (ex-Labradford), Alison Cotton, and Wojciech Rusin.

A smooth and long dive into the depths
of the sounds around us, analog effects
and tape world, otherworldly noises and
opaque, barely perceptible vibrations. 10/10 – NoiseMe

This is a prime 31-minute track, starting
slow and soft, building gradually.
Numerous sounds slowly layer themselves in;
some are voices and others are familiar
but not quite identifiable – somewhat musical
and somewhat otherworldly - Tuning to obscure

Northern Lighthouse
Born in Bologna (IT), based in Brussels (BE), he started releasing tracks in 2014 in the windy and cold northeast of England where he lived for a few years.
His music combines elements of ambient, lo-fi electronic music and field recordings: soundscapes with a nostalgic and emotive atmosphere paying tribute to distant memories and remoted and isolated places.

Duerinckx, Wachtelaer, Massolini trio

Improvised Music
Haekem Theatre: Rue de Laeken - 66 Lakensestraat - 1000 Brussels

The Duerinckx, Wachtelaer, Massolini trio is undoubtedly a trio that will prick your heart.
His uncompromising music will take you on a journey to the confines of a well-assumed freedom...

JJ Duerinckx aka Maurice Charles JJ (B)
Sopranino and baritone saxophones

Practicing improvisation for over 20 years. Many renowned musicians from the world of free improvised music mark his career, such as Lol Coxhill, John Russell, Michel Doneda, Barre Philips, Jacques Foschia, Tom Jackson, Adrian Northover, Matthieu Safatly, Tatsuya Nakatani, Peter Jacquemyn, Roger Turner, Dan Warburton, Anton Mobin... just to name a few.

Sensitive to the visual arts, he is interested in electro-acoustic music, sound art and more particularly in the notion of "soundscapes", a concept dear to the composer R Murray Schaffer in his book "The Tuning of the world". The idea of confronting sound material and melodies, whether abstract or not, constitutes one of the bases of his musical language as well as a vector of energy to share.

In 2018, he founded “Unreal Brotherface” with the acousmatic composer Stephan Dunkelman, whom he met in 2004 within Zohara, an ensemble created by Zahava Seewald produced by John Zorn (Tzadik 2004) in which he played. Unreal Brotherface participated, among others, in the City Sonic Winter session 2019 and the Belgian Music Days 2020

MxSx, his duet with Dimitri Coppe, was created in Flagey during the 2022 Sound Week and is a tribute to the recently deceased composer.
The confrontation of his sound expertise with other modes of artistic expression such as visual arts, performance, contemporary dance, remains essential to his artistic research.
He participates in CEPI founded by double bassist Barre Philips
Collaborations among others with Harold Schellinx, Patricia Kuypers, Frank Beaubois, Pascale Gille, Stéphanie Auberville, Isako Horikawa, Peter M. Friess...

In 2015, he met the multimedia artist Alexandra Dementieva with whom he played in the duo 'Tunnel Hearing' recently joined by the cellist/double bassist José Bedeur.

In March 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, he created Lamaφ (lamaphi), a multidisciplinary protean group, bringing together dancers, musicians and videographers.
It is the basis of the lab'OMFI: a transdisciplinary experimental laboratory which was held at the Halles St Géry in Brussels from 2017 to 2019.

He is founder of the OMFI collective (2011/2019) with cellist Matthieu Safatly and created the group Neptunian Maximalism in 2018 with multi-instrumentalist guitarist Guillaume Cazalet.

Dirk Wachtelaer has been playing drums for more than 30 years.

He has been active in many genres but his main focus has always been on improvisation and experimentation.

He has played with Paul Schutze, Toshinori Kondo, Stevie Wishart, Phillip Clemo, and many others.

He recorded 3 solo albums and leads the ensemble Vanishing Pictures, creating music that vanishes when you try to label it.

Mattia Massolini (IT),
Double bass

Mattia Massolini was born in 1981 in Pavia (IT), he lived in Florence between 2001 and 2006 where he collaborated with several swing and gypsy jazz groups.

In 2008, he moved to Brussels where he began studying classical double bass at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels

In the meantime he has worked with "Too Much and the white nots" and other Belgian songwriters, with the Folk Fusion group "Stingo" and collaborated with several orchestras in Belgium and France (ONB, BPO) .

His interest in improvisation was born during contact dance jams in Brussels, where he met artists who would change his vision and his approach to improvisation: Michel Massot, Ernst Glerum, Jon Rose, Seijiro Murayama, Jean-Luc Guillonet

He has collaborated with several free improvisation collectives such as the P.I.L.S collective, Lamaphi, BIC, Bubble Dance. Member of the improvisation trio MA.MA.AND with Andres Navarro and Marcello Giannandrea
